🚗 Driving Test Tips: What Happens on the Day of Your Driving Test
Got your driving test coming up in Sunderland? Feeling nervous is normal. The good news is, knowing what to expect can help you feel much calmer and more confident before you start.
Here’s a simple guide to help you prepare for your UK driving test.
✅ Arrive at the test centre early
Try to arrive around 10 minutes before your driving test starts. This gives you time to settle your nerves without rushing.
✅ The examiner will check your provisional licence
They’ll confirm your details, ask you to read and sign a declaration on their iPad, and explain the test process.
✅ Eyesight check and show me tell me questions
Before the test begins, you’ll complete an eyesight check and answer one “tell me” question. During the drive, you’ll also be asked one “show me” question.
✅ What happens during the driving test?
During your practical driving test, you’ll normally be asked to:
• Pull up on the left a couple of times
• Move off safely, including an angled start
• Complete a hill start
• Carry out one reverse manoeuvre
• Follow either sat nav directions or traffic signs
• Possibly perform an emergency stop
✅ At the end of the test
The examiner will explain your result and talk through any driving faults. Your driving test report will then be emailed to you.
🚦 Most Common Reasons Learners Fail Their Driving Test
Many learners fail for simple mistakes that can be improved with practice and awareness.
The most common driving test faults include:
• Not checking mirrors properly
• Poor observation at junctions
• Incorrect lane positioning
• Missing road signs or markings
• Moving off without proper checks
• Steering control problems
• Incorrect speed choice
• Hesitation at junctions or roundabouts
Passing your driving test isn’t about being perfect. It’s about showing the examiner you can drive safely, independently, and make good decisions on the road.
If you stay calm, focus on what’s in front of you, and drive the way you do in lessons, you give yourself the best chance of passing 🚗
