Sunderland Driving Test Routes

Nervous about your driving test in Sunderland? Knowing the kinds of roads you may face makes a big difference. Below is a route pupils commonly practise, with a video and tips for each tricky section. Test routes vary, so use this as practice for the types of roads and junctions you may meet, not a guarantee of your exact route.

Route 1: Hylton Castle, the A19 and Hastings Hill

  1. Hylton Castle and Downhill Lane. The route heads through the Hylton Castle area and up to the Downhill Lane interchange roundabout.
  2. Joining the A19. Learners often find joining a fast dual carriageway the most stressful part.
  3. Hastings Hill exit and spiral roundabout. You leave the A19 at Hastings Hill, then come back round the Hastings Hill spiral roundabout, turning right towards the A19 north.
  4. Wessington Way spiral. The route continues down to the Wessington Way spiral roundabout, heading towards Sunderland on the A1231.
  5. Back to the test centre.
